Alternative and Augmentative Communication
Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) is a term used to describe the various methods used to assist individuals who do not use verbal language to communicate. These methods can be used as an alternative to speech or to supplement it. AAC can include communication skills using sign language, speech generating devices, and/or pictures. Developing and using a system of AAC can be a complex process for many users. The likely communication partners may also require training and practice so that the communication system can be used most effectively.
